Over 900 people attended the Montreal TechCrunch Pitch-Off event, which was great exposure for any startup taking the stage. The participants were competing for a chance to attend TechCrunch Disrupt in New York from May 4th to 6th 2015. Out of the eight startups selected to compete, three were awarded a chance to head to New York to grow their business, and Montreal’s own MakerBloks took first place. MakerBloks and its founder Francois Poirier, a former product designer for toy-maker Mattel, are graduates of the Montreal Founder Institute. Makerbloks are small, reactive building blocks that allow anyone to learn and build electronic circuits without any technical background. MakerBloks are reactive, magnetically connecting building blocks that teach children about the world of electronics.

MakerBloks’ win at the first Montreal TechCrunch Pitch-Off is an historic accomplishment. Not only will they attend TechCrunch Disrupt, but they have been awarded a booth to showcase their new product. MakerBloks plans to take the next step on May 12, when it intends to launch a Kickstater campaign soon to fund its first round of production.
