
Jayaraman Chandrasekaran improves people’s lives everyday by providing water and sanitation with his company, Watsan. The global need for clean water and hygienic sanitation is well known. In Chandrasekaran’s home country, India, 3/4 of all villages have no access to clean drinking water. Watsan’s product is impactful because they are low-cost, simple, & can be customized to different types of water problems.
I knew I could help alleviate the suffering of poor people with Watsan technologies.
Chandrasekaran knew he could help millions of people with his experience in technology, chemistry, and plastics design. In 2009 he developed an electricity-free water filter using a new nano-clay particle filtration technique. In 2013 Chandrasekaran partnered with his Watsan co-founder, P. N. Subramanian, and in 2016 Chandrasekaran enrolled in the Founder Institute’s Chennai program to grow and expand Watsan.
Since graduating from the Founder Institute Watsan has received a grant from India’s Millennium Alliance Fund, was a top finalist in the Lufthansa Runway to Success program, and was recognized by top scientists in India. The company has produced over 90,000 personal filters to date, and has the goal of helping 100 million families within the next 3 years.
