In conjunction with the burgeoning online education marketplace, Silicon Valley graduate, Udemy continues to expand. According to a recent announcement, however, they’re not the only ones raking in the benefits. A few months back the company said its top earning instructors were making six-figures simply by teaching courses on the online education site. As it turns out, a good number of their peers are pulling in impressive numbers as well.
The company recently told GigaOm that a quarter of its approved instructors will close out the year with at least $10,000 in income from courses purchased on its site. According to the article, “The company declined to share the total number of instructors offering classes on Udemy but said the figure has climbed 300 percent in the last year. About 60 percent of all instructors on the site are “approved,” meaning their courses meet a checklist of standards and can be searchable by students online. The site has attracted about 400,000 registered students, which is about a 520 percent increase from last year.”
While the most profitable courses tend to fall in the technical realm (Microsoft Excel or Python), instructors teaching courses on topics like yoga and cooking can make their fare share as well. Photographer David Nightingale, for example, has made $31,000 in just four months with his “art of black and white photography” course, suggesting that if a Udemy course is made well, it can attract a large audience.
