Driving Economic Growth Through Women’s Entrepreneurship
The Founder Institute had an existing program in Kabul, which then evolved into a sponsored program with USAID. The goal of the program was to continue fostering entrepreneurship in Kabul, with an additional focus on providing opportunities for women to launch companies. Through this initiative, FI ran two pre-seed accelerator programs, training over 700 attendees and launching 22 new technology startups, with 35% being women-led. Due to its established Female Founder Initiative, Founder Institute was well equipped to support female entrepreneurship.

The Challenge

In Afghanistan, women face significant barriers to entrepreneurship due to cultural, economic, and political challenges. Limited access to capital, mentorship, and formal business education further restricts their ability to launch and grow businesses.

USAID recognized the need for an acceleration program tailored to Afghanistan’s unique context. They sought a partner with the expertise, flexibility, and network required to empower women entrepreneurs in a high-risk environment.

FI had an existing accelerator in Kabul, making it a natural fit to scale its efforts with USAID’s support. However, ensuring security, accessibility, and cultural alignment remained key challenges.

The Solution: A Customized Acceleration Program

To address these challenges, FI and USAID launched an accelerator tailored to Afghan women in 2018 and 2019 with the following initiatives:

    Infrastructure & Accessibility

FI facilitated partnerships with local service providers to offer event spaces, high-speed internet, and co-working opportunities for female entrepreneurs. This ensured that participants had access to reliable infrastructure, allowing them to focus on developing their startups without worrying about logistical barriers.

    Educational Workshops & Community Building

Over 700 attendees participated in 10 public startup education events featuring successful entrepreneurs. These workshops not only provided fundamental business training but also helped build a strong community of female entrepreneurs who could support each other in their journeys. FI utilized its Entrepreneur DNA Assessment to identify accelerator applicants with the highest entrepreneurial potential, independent of their education or business/ business idea.

    Tailored Accelerator & Mentorship Program

FI’s team then designed a customized accelerator program to address Afghanistan’s unique challenges. The curriculum was adapted to support non-tech businesses and ensure women’s safety and participation. Additionally, over 50 mentors from Afghanistan, Silicon Valley, and beyond provided guidance, sharing global best practices to help participants develop businesses that were both locally relevant and globally competitive.

    Post-Program Support & Sustainability

Afghan entrepreneurs launched diverse and innovative solutions. Startups founded included a women-led transportation service, a paper bag production company, a ketchup/sauce brand, and a financial service startup. Several women-led startups continued to grow with additional mentorship and funding support post-program. USAID and FI offered continued advisory services and technical support for a year following the program’s completion. This ongoing assistance ensured that startups had the guidance and resources needed to sustain and scale their operations.

Key Takeaways

The FI and USAID partnership successfully launched an accelerator program that empowered Afghan women entrepreneurs, resulting in tangible outcomes like new startups, community building, and ongoing support.

Results

The FI and USAID program successfully delivered two accelerator cohorts in Kabul, resulting in numerous founder graduations, new startup launches (with a significant portion being women-led), and extensive educational and mentorship opportunities.
