Unlocking Opportunities for First-Time Founders in Eastside Seattle
Startup 425, a collaborative economic initiative by the cities of Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Redmond, Bothell, and Renton, partnered with Founder Institute to create a free accelerator supporting first-time entrepreneurs in launching sustainable businesses. Leveraging FI’s proven methodology and platform, the program introduced a dedicated track for founders of traditional businesses, ensuring accessibility for a diverse range of entrepreneurs.

The Challenge

Small businesses in Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Bothell, Redmond, and Renton struggled with limited early-stage funding, lack of adequate resources, and complex regulations, making growth difficult. A risk-averse culture further discouraged aspiring entrepreneurs despite a strong potential to serve underserved niches.

As a result, the Eastside region's skilled professionals were drawn to joining tech giants instead of fueling local economic development.

Startup 425 aimed to change that by empowering first-time entrepreneurs to build sustainable companies beyond tech and including vital “main street” businesses like restaurants and retail. To make this vision a reality, the organization needed a structured, proven program with strong resources and a network that nurtures a new generation of small business founders.

The Solution: A Custom Accelerator for Maximum Economic Impact

Founder Institute designed a customized accelerator program for Startup 425 to address these challenges head-on, delivering to first-time founders the structure, resources, and mentorship they needed to succeed.

    Accessible & Inclusive Pathways

To cater to diverse founders, Founder Institute created two program tracks—one for scalable startups and another for small businesses. This ensured both high-growth and traditional businesses received the right guidance. Over 175 founders took FI’s Entrepreneur DNA Test, a research-backed assessment identifying the traits of successful entrepreneurs. From these, FI’s admissions team handpicked participants, curating a cohort of high-potential founders.
