To activate first-time founders to build businesses in the Eastside Seattle region, Founder Institute launched an idea-stage accelerator (“Startup425 Accelerator”) - and utilized FI’s methodology and platform to create a new track for founders of traditional businesses.
Small businesses in Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Bothell, Redmond, and Renton struggled with limited early-stage funding, lack of adequate resources, and complex regulations, making growth difficult. A risk-averse culture further discouraged aspiring entrepreneurs despite a strong potential to serve underserved niches.
As a result, the Eastside region's skilled professionals were drawn to joining tech giants instead of fueling local economic development.
Startup 425 aimed to change that by empowering first-time entrepreneurs to build sustainable companies beyond tech and including vital “main street” businesses like restaurants and retail. To make this vision a reality, the organization needed a structured, proven program with strong resources and a network that nurtures a new generation of small business founders.
Founder Institute designed a customized accelerator program for Startup 425 to address these challenges head-on, delivering to first-time founders the structure, resources, and mentorship they needed to succeed.
Since launching in Fall 2024, Startup 425 has completed four cohorts. Key outcomes include:
Across four cohorts, Startup 425 enrolled 170 founders and supported 89 graduates in building new businesses in the Eastside region. The number of graduates more than doubled from the first cohort to the fourth, reflecting the program's growing reach and effectiveness. The program earned early public backing from Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson and was renewed after its first cohort for additional cycles through 2026.
Having completed four cohorts of its flagship accelerator, Startup 425 and Founder Institute are expanding the partnership into new program formats. The next phase includes a new AI-focused bootcamp for aspiring entrepreneurs in the Eastside region, launching in Summer 2026 and culminating in a live Demo Day during Seattle Tech Week 2026.
The feedback from our partners and the founders themselves has been overwhelmingly positive, with founders praising the quality of the platform and curriculum, and the utility of the resources FI has collected or created to support founder education.
