Speed and execution are key defensibility strategies for many companies that are not driven by new concepts. However, as Joe explains in the video below, If “you’re a concept driven company than your intellectual property can be a savior” down the road that can help reassure investors, stop infringers, scare away competitors, and become a source of revenue.   

Joe Betts-LaCroix founded OQO in 2000, and established the resulting market category of smaller-than-laptop PCs.  Joe has patents pending and granted for over 80 inventions in a diversity of fields. He is currently advising several startups, creating and monetizing IP, and is a core member of the human genome sequencing company Halcyon Molecular

In this talk from the Silicon Valley Founder Institute, Joe shares his experiences with patents, and gives a framework for how startups should approach IP.  He explains the value of IP for startups, the various types of patents and filing processes, and gives advice on avoiding IP pitfalls and dealing with patent trolls.
