"You're not a real manager until you fire somebody." Striking, but true. Startup recruitment and HR is not always a pleasant experience, and most founders would prefer to focus their energies elsewhere. However, as David Weekly explains in the video below, deprioritizing or outsourcing it is "a recipe for failure."
David is the founder of PBworks and the HackerDojo (an awesome, affordable co-working space for startups in Silicon Valley that many FI companies call home), as well as a cofounder at the SuperHappyDevHouse and Partner at Mexican.vc. David also won an Founder Institute award earlier this year for being the "Most Supportive Mentor" worldwide.
In this talk from last year's Silicon Valley Founder Institute, David shares a treasure trove of interviewing tips, the most important qualities in candidates that most people overlook, how to set expectations with new hires from the outset, how to build an efficient team where each employee acts "as a neuron in the brain," and much more.
This primer on startup HR is a must watch for any founder. If you like it, follow David on Twitter at @dweekly.
