Building Entrepreneurial Readiness for Angola's Economic Diversification

TotalEnergies Angola partnered with Founder Institute Angola to design and deliver the 100 Empreendedores Program, a six-month CSR acceleration initiative supporting early-stage Angolan founders. By combining the Founder Institute's global methodology with a locally adapted Coach & Do approach, the program equipped entrepreneurs with the strategic clarity, operational structure, and ecosystem readiness to build sustainable businesses aligned with Angola's economic diversification agenda.

Supporting Angola's Next Generation of Entrepreneurs Through Corporate Social Responsibility
TotalEnergies Angola, a multinational energy company with a long-standing presence in Angola and a strong commitment to local content development and community investment, partnered with Founder Institute Angola to launch the 100 Empreendedores Program. As part of its corporate social responsibility strategy, TotalEnergies sought to support entrepreneurship as a lever for economic diversification, job creation, and long-term business sustainability. Founder Institute Angola was selected as the implementing partner due to its globally proven methodology, local market knowledge, and ability to adapt acceleration models to Angola's entrepreneurial and development context.

The Challenge

At the start of the program, most entrepreneurs were operating in informal or partially structured environments. While many had viable products or services and early operations underway, they lacked the strategic structure, planning discipline, and execution clarity required to compete and grow within the ecosystem.

Key challenges included limited clarity around founder identity, leadership posture, and long-term business direction; gaps in strategic planning, product design, financial organization, and profitability models; limited understanding of how to engage effectively with large corporate partners and navigate visibility opportunities; and insufficient access to hands-on mentorship capable of translating business concepts into daily operations. Founders also faced significant emotional and leadership pressures without adequate support systems to manage resilience and collaborative decision-making.

From a partner perspective, there was a clear need for a credible, evidence-based CSR framework that could transparently demonstrate how entrepreneurial support translated into measurable progress and alignment with Angola's national economic diversification priorities.

The Solution: 100 Empreendedores Program

To address these challenges, Founder Institute Angola and TotalEnergies designed and delivered a six-month hybrid acceleration program combining the global Founder Institute methodology with a locally adapted Coach & Do model focused on applicability, accountability, and ecosystem readiness.

    1

    Structured Curriculum with Local Adaptation

Founders followed the core Founder Institute curriculum while engaging in customized sessions aligned with Angola's market realities and priority sectors. The curriculum emphasized strategic clarity, product design, financial organization, go-to-market planning, and founder leadership — ensuring alignment between business stage and execution strategy.

    Coach & Do Mentorship Model

Rather than advisory-only mentorship, the program introduced a hands-on coaching approach where 20+ expert mentors worked directly with founders across key business functions. Each founder applied concepts in real time using structured checklists and milestones, resulting in a capstone dossier of evidence consolidating learning, decisions, and business outputs over the six-month journey.

  • In-Person Networking
    3

    In-Person Ecosystem Activations & Networking

The program blended online delivery with micro bootcamps, in-person networking events, and ecosystem engagements, including participation in business expos, open markets, and curated networking sessions. Six in-person events, including Demo Day and Graduation, strengthened founders' go-to-market strategies, public visibility, and readiness to engage partners and clients.

    Leadership, Media & Founder Well-Being

Special sessions prepared founders for media appearances, public presentations, and industry events, including communication coaching and structured checkpoints for intentional public engagement. The program also integrated a mental health professional to support emotional regulation, resilience, and work–life balance, an uncommon but critical element of the program design.

Key Takeaways

The 100 Empreendedores Program delivered measurable outcomes across founder development, ecosystem activation, and partner engagement, while generating evidence directly aligned with Angola's economic diversification agenda.

Results

The 100 Empreendedores Program produced notable results across founder transformation, sectoral impact, and CSR accountability. Diagnostic work conducted after program completion revealed a consistent pattern: most ventures transitioned from informal or partially structured operations into more organized, strategically aligned businesses — with 73% reporting increased revenue or customer growth, and in several cases revenue growth of up to approximately 50%. At cohort level, the majority of businesses are in a growth-to-expansion transition phase, with several demonstrating validated demand that in some cases exceeds current operational capacity. All 15 graduated businesses remain active in the market, and 100% of founders demonstrated improved strategic clarity, pitching ability, and execution focus. The primary constraints limiting further scale are not related to product viability, but to execution capacity: limited access to expansion financing, production and operational bottlenecks, and gaps in marketing and market visibility.

What's Next

Building on the success of the 100 Empreendedores Program, Founder Institute Angola and its partners envision a new phase of ecosystem-led growth, positioning entrepreneurship as a key driver of Angola's economic transformation.

  • Future cohorts will deepen focus on creative, food, and resource-based industries, enabling Angolan founders to compete regionally and globally while remaining grounded in local identity and value creation.
  • For the ventures now ready to move beyond training, the priority is targeted financing mechanisms, operational and implementation support, and access to strategic partnerships and distribution channels — the critical enablers for the next phase of growth.
  • Through expanded partnerships across corporate, public, academic, and development sectors, Founder Institute Angola will scale its Coach & Do model, strengthen long-term impact measurement, and support a new generation of founders building businesses with purpose, cultural relevance, and lasting social value.
