Jason Calacanis needs little introduction to those involved in startups, but we’ll introduce him anyway: Jason Calacanis is an entrepreneur, blogger, the host of This Week in Startups, and an angel investor whose investments include Tumblr and Uber.

Recently, Calacanis gave a talk at a session for the San Francisco Founder Institute, in which he drew from his considerable startup and investing experience to give Founders some useful advice on improving their pitches, interacting with investors, and more.

Jason Calacanis is also a Mentor for the Silicon Valley Founder Institute, which is currently accepting applications.

One of the most valuable bits of advice that Calacanis gave to Founders was to research the investor they’re trying to entice with their startup and to first focus the attention on them, praising them on a recent  investment they made or asking questions about the industry they’re in, then segueing into your startup. If you begin the conversation simply talking about yourself and your startup, you’ll run the risk of ruining your first impression with arrogance and eagerness and scare of a prospective investor.

For even more valuable startup wisdom, watch the video below for the full session.

If you could benefit from startup advice from top experts, then apply to the Silicon Valley Founder Institute today!
