Grad Profile: Peerby socializes the borrowing and renting experience

Posted by Emma Tzeng on 2013-01-27

Grad Profiles highlight the personal and professional stories of Founder Institute Graduates from across the globe.

This profile on Peerby, a graduate of the Amsterdam Founder Institute, was written by Emma Tzeng. Founded in 2012 by Daan Weddepohl, Peerby allows people to find, share, and rent or borrow durable goods from their neighbors.

It’s late on a Sunday evening. After a weekend of non-stop activities, you’re finally ready to burrow into bed early and start the week off with a restful sleep. Just as you crawl under the covers, however, a bolt on your bed frame comes loose. You hear a loud creak as your mattress caves in from the hardware mishap.

It dawns on you suddenly: you lent your toolkit to your brother, who lives an hour north, last month as he was preparing to move into a new apartment. You have no choice but to drag yourself to the nearest 24-hour convenience store, disgruntled and exhausted.

We’ve all been there. Having to locate and invest in items you don’t technically need is a pain point for people. And yet, as interconnected as the world has become, it’s almost silly to think how disconnected we are when it comes down to the simple, everyday occurrences like completing a home repair project.

Dutch startup Peerby wants to change the way people consume durable goods. To tackle this mission, Peerby offers a platform for neighbors to share and rent or borrow common household items such as cooking equipment and tools.

Offered as an app and a website, Peerby uses Facebook, email, and smartphone notifications to search for others in a user’s postal code region. It then sends requests to neighbors and helps connect the user with the borrower or renter so they can negotiate the terms of use. For extra protection, Peerby also offers pickup and return reminders and product insurance.

Peerby is founded by Daan Weddepohl, a former CTO, who first thought of the idea after watching a TED talk titled “The Case for Collaborative Consumption” by Rachel Botsman. Weddepohl’s aim is to focus on people rather than goods, which is why he chose not to make item listings a part of the platform’s offering.

After launching in July 2012, Peerby received an investment by SonomaVentures in November 2012 after being recognized for its unique market offering.

Currently, Peerby is only available in the Netherlands. However, Weddepohl hopes to expand the startup to a global scale in the future. If his dream is realized, we can expect demand-based sharing to become more of a normality in communities across the world.
