Grad Profile: @2RedBeans helps tech-savvy Chinese singles find love
Grad Profiles highlight the personal and professional stories of Founder Institute Graduates from across the globe.
This profile on 2RedBeans, a graduate of the Silicon Valley Founder Institute, was written by Emma Tzeng. Founded in 2010 by Q Zhao and Jeff Shi, 2RedBeans is an online dating community for Chinese singles in the U.S. and abroad.
Nowadays, it seems that anyone with an Internet connection can find love. Jewish singles looking to meet other Jewish singles can log on to JDate.com, a dating community catering to a niche demographic. Graduates from an Ivy League interested in only dating other Ivy League alumni can create a profile at IvyLeague.com, a dating site created exclusively for Ivy Leaguers to connect. With the recent proliferation of specialized niche dating services, there is a place for literally everyone to find his or her soulmate.
In the same vein, 2RedBeans is an online dating community for “Chinese singles looking for love online.” The premise is simple: Chinese singles looking to meet other Chinese singles online can register for a 2RedBeans profile, which includes their values, personality traits, and interests, and connect with other members of the 2RedBeans community.
For a startup like 2RedBeans targeting the Chinese community, the opportunity for growth in both the U.S. and international markets is enormous. Earlier this year, a report from the Pew Research Center revealed that the number of Asian American immigrants to the U.S. has surpassed that of Hispanics in the past couple years, accounting for over 40 percent of America’s immigration. Of these Asian Americans, the population of Chinese is large and climbing. In 2010, Chinese Americans made up over 3.3 million of the U.S. population--and that number continues to grow.
2RedBeans is also unique in its reach: its dating service is available both in the U.S. and internationally, as users have the option to use the 2RedBeans website in the Chinese or English language. There are over 300 more Chinese people outside of the U.S., which greatly increases the potential market share of 2RedBeans.
Founded in 2010 by Q Zhao and Jeff Shi, 2RedBeans was designed by Zhao with the needs of a single Chinese women in mind, a demographic that she herself falls under. After its beta launch last year, 2RedBeans enjoyed a user base of over 1,000 Chinese Americans and helped to connect more than 100 couples through its unique matching algorithm and tightly-focused community.
As niche dating communities such as 2RedBeans continue to expand and generate even more success stories, it’s impossible to argue that online dating is certainly gaining momentum and acceptance in the U.S. and beyond.
