More than 10 years before building his own company, Dayal Nathan, a plastics engineer from CIPET, worked for a company in Chennai. While he was involved mainly in the manufacturing aspects of the company, he questioned the other aspects of the company. Looking into company’s electricity bill, he saw the electricity bill was unnecessarily high.

Nathan would go on to become a CEO of the company and eventually resolved the issue of unnecessary power use in the company and was able to decrease abnormally high power bills. This particular event would be the inspiration behind his own company, Energyly. "That was the birth of the idea. It was in my mind, although I didn’t start it then," says Nathan.

Prior to starting Energyly, Nathan also had his hand in two other ventures including an animation studio and compact disc production. But it wasn't until his experience with the Founder Institute that Nathan was able to solidify his ideas and create a business model for his venture.

Since launching the company, Energyly has met considerable success, having been featured on local media channels like The Hindu, and are recipients of the "Best Startup - Energy" Award by CII Startupreneurs and "Best Utility App" Award by Global Mobile App Summit & Awards.

Energyly creates apps that work by first entering specific data, which then produces detailed energy analytics of power consumed and a prediction of electricity to be consumed for the next five years, even offering month-on-month and year-on-year comparisons. This data can be downloaded on to a computer and analyzed for optimized energy consumption. While larger companies usually have access to larger funds for power consumption monitoring, Energyly allows smaller businesses or individual consumers the ability to control their consumption for a lower price.

As energy consumption continues to be a hot topic in the sustainability discussion, Energyly’s product is a welcome solution to a pervasive problem. The company is currently available in Chennai with plans of expanding further to various regions in India, including Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
