Grad Profile: @BeforeWeDo puts STD testing in the hands of people

Posted by Emma Tzeng on 2013-08-14

Grad Profiles highlight the personal and professional stories of Founder Institute Graduates from across the globe.

This profile on BeforeWeDo, a graduate of the Silicon Valley Founder Institute, was written by Emma Tzeng. Founded in 2013 by Stefan Broda, BeforeWeDo offers STD test kits that enable people to manage their sexual health at home

As a nation, it’s befuddling how little we speak of and understand about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): the American Sexual Health Association estimates that the direct cost of sexually transmitted infections rack up to a staggering $15.6 annually.

Startup BeforeWeDo has set out to lower those numbers by making STD testing more private and accessible. Instead of having to locate and go in person for testing, BeforeWeDo users can order test kits through the website and have them delivered directly to their homes. This eliminates the hassle and potential discomfort of having to show up to an STD test.

Founded in 2013 by Stefan Broda, BeforeWeDo seeks to “empower sexually active people to manage your sexual health at home” by making it easy for people to claim full control over their personal health.

Currently, the website offers four home testing kits ranging from $39.99 to $159.98 depending on the type of test. Anyone can order kits online and all tests can be completed in the privacy of one’s own home. Results can be received just 20 minutes after performing the test or within 5-10 business days depending on the type of test.

Last month, BeforeWeDo won the 14th Founder Showcase Pitch Competition, beating out over 40 startups from across the globe. The startup also won first place in Startup Weekend Bay Area earlier this year.

As BeforeWeDo continues to provide private, at-home STD testing for people, it ultimately hopes to foster better-informed individuals by removing the potential embarrassment and inconvenience of in-person testing.
