Fall 2011 Amsterdam

The Founder Institute carefully recruits approximately 25 Mentors per Semester, who are normally the CEO or founder of a successful startup. The Mentors are selected based on their ability to convey lessons learned on a topic in the curriculum and help participating Founders by sharing their relevant experiences. Mentors are accessible to Founders in the program during the sessions and through email. The shared equity upside of each Semester encourages supportive and collaborative relationships with the Mentors.

The Institute recruits some of the Mentors after a Semester has launched to match the needs of Founders with the skills of Mentors.

Aaron Patzer

Founder, Mint.com

Aaron Patzer is both the visionary and technical mind behind Mint.com. With 10 patents filed or pending, Aaron brings strong innovation skills to Mint. Prior to founding Mint, Aaron worked in the fields of bioinformatics, optical networking, computer architecture (including 3 patents in the PlayStation 3 chip), and computer aided design. Aaron holds an MSEE from Princeton University and a BS in computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering from Duke University. In 2008 he was named one of CNN Money's "Money Heroes", and a World Economic Forum Tech Pioneer. In 2009, he was named to Inc Magazine's Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30, and Fortune's Top 40 Business Leaders Under 40.

Bart Jan Van Genderen

Bart-Jan van Genderen Bart-Jan van Genderen grew up with a passion for Television. Starting out as a cameraman, he soon started a co-operation with a nine other high-level cameramen and DOP’s. BV De Jongens (The Boys Inc.) started out as a ENG company, but with a difference: that it was fully owned by the employees themselves and that it therefore had a focus on great operators, creativity and strong personal relationships. The company later merged with Video Associates into Team Facilities and grew into a full service multicam- and post-production facility. Aware of the enourmous opportunities of digital media creation, Bart-Jan then started digital post-production house Avi-drome, and local fiber-optic telco GVH. Out of the possibilities that the fiber-optic infrastructure created, grew ParkPost and Remote Editing Solutions, a remote, cloud based solution for the editing, storage and distribution of digital broadcast media. Combined they now form Consolidated Media Industries (CMI), and with the addition of full-service broadcast media service provider DutchView and the start of NLbuzz, a company that specializes in developing B2C online media-propositions, they collectively form the largest media service provider in The Netherlands. “You can only ask your self something if you’ve tried it. Bernd Damme

Founder , Eye-Wear.nl

Bernd is the founder of Eye-Wear.nl, a company specializing in the sale of branded sunglasses. He is also the Cravatto Pelliano, a menswear company. He has a degree in International Business Administration from Erasmus University. He is also involved in promoting entrepreneurship among young people / students in the Netherlands, but also through several management positions in the field by giving speeches, training and coaching of start (young) entrepreneurs as vice chairman of the Young Sagamores Foundation.

Bert Nijmeijer

Bob is currently the managing partner at Result, a management consultancy for companies in the TIME sector focused on internationalism. He has an MBA from Universiteit van Amsterdam and an undergraduate degree in medieval language and literature.

Christiaan Kraaijenhagen

Founder and CEO, Helio Hub

Christiaan is the founder and CEO at Helio Hub. In the last 5+ years of his professional career, he has led, as general manager and director of marketing, two corporate ventures within Philips. Prior to this, he had various senior roles in general management, corporate restructuring, post merger integration, business transformation, innovation, operations, finance and strategy. He worked at Boer & Croon, Tata Steel, Berenschot and was involved in several start-up companies and sustainable initiatives including the Circle Economy. Diederik Stols

Diederik Stols is a partner at Boekx Advocaten, a law firm based in Amsterdam dedicated to media and intellectual property. He previously practised at the law firms Allen & Overy and DLA Piper. Diederik’s practice has a focus on new media, traditional media, fast moving consumer goods and cultural institutions. Diederik has written dozens of publications about IP and new media in nationwide newspapers and in legal journals. He is a country correspondent for Entertainment Law Review, and a frequent speaker at seminars and conventions. Diederik lectures on IP at the postgraduate institute of Leiden University, as well as the MBA Cross Media program founded by Lemniscaat Education.

Floris Van Alkemade

Floris van Alkemade has over 15 years of experience in venture capital, M&A, business development. He currently manages Solid Ventures, a venture capital fund that invests in early stage Dutch technology companies, that he founded in 2006. Before Solid Ventures, he was a general partner at NeSBIC CTe Fund, a EUR 210M value added venture capital funds that invested in 38 early stage technology companies in Europe and US. In 2000 he managed the NeSBIC CTe Fund office in Silicon Valley, US. Before starting in venture capital Floris worked at Unisource NV, a pan-European telecommunications company, the investment bank MeesPierson NV and the consulting firm Andersson Elffers Felix BV. He has a Masters Degree in Business Econometrics from the Free University of Amsterdam. He is a member of the board of several companies like BoosterMedia and Layar.

Jeroen is also an active informal investor and venture partner and shareholder at a number of venture funds, among which Solid Ventures.

Jim Stolze

Founder, TEDxAmsterdam

Jim is a creative strategist who has founded several companies in the media sector. In 2009 he organized the first TEDx in Amsterdam. He writes books about the digital society and attends and speaks at TED-events. He has a degree in the field of communications from Rotterdam University as well as an MBA in crossmedia from Lemniscaat Management School. Jim always looks for ways to connect people and ideas.

Joris Van Heukelom

Joris is currently a partner at Makerstreet. He was previously the CEO of ilse media, an online publishing and media search company. Prior to ilse, he served as director of content and consumer marketing at KPN telecommunicatios. Additionally he has also worked as VP of content marketing at MTV networks for 7 years. Joris holds an undergraduate degree in communication science from KUL (Universiteit Leuven) and a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from Universite de Bruxelles.

Kees Zegers

Kees Zegers has been one of Dutch most famous and successful Internet entrepreneurs. In the past 15 years he founded 14 companies (including Dialogue Company and NU.nl) of which five were Dutch leaders. Kees started as a copywriter in advertising and later co-founder and award-winning creative director of Not Just Film (now Y & R / NJF ). In October 2011 he published the book Seed Capital , a book of 100 tips for successful business.

Lucien Engelen

Lucien Engelen as founding Director of the Radboud REshape & Innovation Centre of the Radboud University Medical Centre (RUNMC) . This center will follow or create trends, translated idea's into practice and vast progress in what he calls Participatory Health. He is the founder & Curator of TEDxMaastricht "the Future of Health", Faculty of FutureMed track Singularity University (founded by Google, NASA and Autodesk) Silicon Valley, Mentor Health of the Founder Institute, Amsterdam. Together with the Mayo Clinic he founded the Global Social Media Network for the healthcare. Fall 2011 he founded the Radboud Reshape Academy, with (international) Masterclasses about the upcoming changes as described above. Lucien acts as well as Head of the Regional Emergency Healthcare Network and is advisory to the executive board at RUNMC.

Lucien Burm

CEO, Kimengi

Lucien Burm is co-founder and CEO of a Dutch recommendation technology company called Kimengi. Out of that company, f»dforward emerged, a smart widget network providing cross-blog suggestions for articles to read next. f»dforward has been available on tens of thousands on blogs producing millions of suggestions each day. In November 2011 a new product will spawn from the Kimengi labs. Not much is known yet, only that it will revolutionize the way we receive and share news. Prior to Kimengi, Lucien worked for more than 16 years in several web, new media and cross-media companies after starting his own small internet consultancy in the mid 90s. During the past 16 years, Lucien and co-founder Christian Vogel remained vigilent and dedicated to creating new concepts of recommendation for the Web through several recommendation technology experiments before before they finally the web was ready for some groundbreaking technology in 2006 leading to the official start of Kimengi in 2008. Lucien is also a news junkie and a social media schizophrenic. He pretends to know one or two things about quality coffee, real Italian food and ditto wines. Plays guitar longer than being involved in the Interwebs. Lost half his hair in the meantime though.

Maarten is currently the general manager and founder at Layar and the founder, partner, and mobile service architect at SPRXmobile. He previously co-founded and organized Mobile Monday Amsterdam. Phil Libin

Phil Libin is the CEO of Evernote, a web service designed to allow users to easily capture and store information, memories, and content in any environment. Prior to Evernote, Phil was a founder of two other successful tech startups: CoreStreet and Engine 5. He has been written about in publications as diverse as BusinessWeek, The New York Times, The Economist and, surprisingly, Locksmith Ledger. Phil is also an investor and advisor in several startups and the inventor of several issued and pending technology patents.

He is also a member of the Topteam Creative Industry at Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, head of Emerging Technologies at THNK Amsterdam School for Creative Leadership, double alumnus at Singularity University / FutureMed Executive Programs 2010 and 2011, an advisory board member at TEDxHealth / TEDxMaastricht, and co-organizer at TEDx Amsterdam (TEDxAMS). Yuri earned a master's in marketing and strategy at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.
